The Machine Stops

These screen-printed images were created in response to the short story “The Machine Stops” by E. M. Forster. This story looks at the relationship between humans and technology; creating a world where people have become reliant on technological advances. However, when this fails, the people can no longer survive.

With my work I wanted to show through abstract shapes the relationship that the author depicts. This involved exploring and textures derived from different sections of the story, pairing the layers in ways such as by using juxtaposition, to highlight the opposition of the two elements: human and machine. Some of the images show degrees of difference, others similarities to reflect the complex interrelationship.
